“Heavyweight” is the most abused word in hoodies. Brands slap it on 300 GSM fleece and 500 GSM cotton alike, and the product photo looks identical either way. The only thing that actually tells you what you’re getting is GSM — grams per square metre, the printed weight of the fabric — and most brands never publish it.
We pulled the live catalogs of three apparel brands and ranked their hoodies by the weights they do publish, from 271 all the way to 530 GSM. Here’s what’s genuinely heavyweight, what only claims to be, and which one is worth its price.
Quick picks
| Award | Pick | Weight / Price |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall heavyweight | Jamroc Resilience Heavyweight Cotton Hoodie | 530 GSM · $165 |
| Best budget (best feel per dollar) | Farm Brand “Just Right” Surf Hoodie | 281 GSM · $40 |
| Warmest for cold weather | Farm Brand Backroads Sherpa Full-Zip | 417 GSM · $60 |
| Best heavyweight zip-up | Jamroc Heavyweight Essential Zip Hoodie | 530 GSM · $165 |
How we scored
We don’t have these hoodies in hand. Instead of pretending we do, we ranked them on data that’s verifiable from a distance and checked against each brand’s live product feed on July 23, 2026.
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric weight | 40% | Published GSM (or oz converted to GSM). The whole point of a heavyweight hoodie. |
| Fibre honesty | 25% | Is the weight from dense cotton, or from a polyester fleece lining? They wear very differently. |
| Value | 20% | Price per gram of fabric, not price alone. |
| Size range | 15% | How far the sizing actually extends. |
What we can’t judge: how it feels after twenty washes, whether the stitching lasts, or how a colour looks in daylight. No spec answers those, and we don’t claim otherwise.
First: what “heavyweight” actually means
One conversion unlocks the whole category. 1 oz/yd² ≈ 33.9 GSM, so a hoodie sold as “8 oz” is about 271 GSM. Here’s how the trade reads the numbers:
| Weight | What it is |
|---|---|
| 280–350 GSM (8.3–10.3 oz) | Standard hoodie. Most “hoodies” live here. |
| 350–400 GSM | Solid mid-heavy. Noticeably substantial. |
| 400 GSM+ (11.8 oz+) | Genuine heavyweight. Structured, warm, heavy in the hand. |
| 500 GSM+ (14.8 oz+) | Outerwear-adjacent. Holds its shape rather than draping. |
By that standard, a lot of “heavyweight” hoodies — including most of Farm Brand’s cotton range at 271–281 GSM — are really standard weight. The genuine heavyweights below start at 400 GSM.
The comparison table
Read from live product feeds, July 23, 2026. Prices change — treat these as the range at time of writing.
| Hoodie | Weight | Fibre | Price | $/100 GSM | Sizes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jamroc Resilience | 530 GSM | 100% cotton | $165 | $31 | 2XS–XL |
| Jamroc Essential Zip | 530 GSM | cotton | $165 | $31 | S–2XL |
| Jamroc Boxy (Black) | 500 GSM | cotton | $225 | $45 | S–2XL |
| Farm Brand Backroads Sherpa | 417 GSM | 100% polyester, sherpa-lined | $60 | $14 | XS–2XL |
| Jamroc Culture Club Zip | 410 GSM | cotton | $110 | $27 | S–2XL |
| Farm Brand Just Right Surf | 281 GSM | cotton | $40 | $14 | XS–2XL |
| Cooyah graphic hoodies | not published | not published | ~$48 | — | S–2XL |
Two things jump out. Jamroc owns the genuine heavyweight end (410–530 GSM cotton) but charges for it. Farm Brand’s sherpa zip hits 417 GSM at $60, but that weight comes from a bonded polyester fleece lining, not dense cotton — so it’s the value champion on the scale, with an asterisk.
1. Jamroc Resilience Heavyweight Cotton Hoodie — Best overall
530 GSM · 100% cotton · $165 · 2XS–XL
Shop the Resilience Hoodie (affiliate link)
This is as heavy as cotton hoodies get in the mainstream. At 530 GSM of 100% cotton, the fabric is roughly double a standard 280 GSM hoodie — dense enough to hold its shape instead of draping, with an embroidered collegiate “RESILIENCE 2026” front rather than a printed graphic. Jamroc publishes GSM on 78 of its styles, which is why it dominates a list built on fabric weight: almost nobody else prints the number, let alone hits this figure in pure cotton.
Watch for: it stops at XL — the heaviest Jamroc pieces don’t run to the extended sizes the rest of its catalog does. And at $165 it’s a real investment. Check the Jamroc sizing guide before ordering — the charts are flat measurements, so it runs larger than the numbers suggest.
2. Farm Brand “Just Right” Surf Hoodie — Best budget
281 GSM · cotton · $40 · XS–2XL
Shop Farm Brand (affiliate link)
Honest label first: at 281 GSM this is standard weight, not true heavyweight. But it’s the best feel-per-dollar on this list. At $40 you get a genuinely substantial cotton hoodie for less than a third of Jamroc’s price, and on cost-per-gram it’s less than half as expensive. If you want a hoodie that feels solid without the $165 commitment — and you don’t need the outerwear-like density of 500+ GSM — this is the smart-money pick.
Watch for: don’t expect the structured, holds-its-shape feel of a 530 GSM cotton hoodie. This drapes more. It’s a very good standard hoodie, not a heavyweight one.
3. Farm Brand Backroads Sherpa Full-Zip — Warmest
417 GSM · 100% polyester, sherpa-lined · $60 · XS–2XL
Shop Farm Brand (affiliate link)
The heaviest hoodie Farm Brand publishes — and the value leader on the scale at $14 per 100 GSM. But read the fibre: the 417 GSM comes from a bonded polyester sherpa lining, not dense knit cotton. That makes it the warmest option here by a distance — the fleece traps heat — but it wears differently: plush and insulating rather than structured. It’s the pick for a genuinely cold climate, not for the boxy heavyweight-cotton look.
Watch for: 100% polyester. If you specifically want heavy cotton, this isn’t it, despite the high number. Compare fibre with fibre — that’s the whole trap of shopping on GSM alone.
4. Jamroc Heavyweight Essential Zip Hoodie — Best zip-up
530 GSM · cotton · $165 · S–2XL
Shop the Zip Hoodie (affiliate link)
The full-zip sibling of our top pick, at the same 530 GSM cotton. A zip changes how a heavyweight wears — easier to layer, easier to vent — and at this weight it’s a substantial, structured jacket alternative. It runs S–2XL, one size further than the pullover Resilience.
5. Jamroc Culture Club Zip Hoodie — Best mid-priced heavyweight
410 GSM · cotton · $110 · S–2XL
Shop Jamroc (affiliate link)
If $165 is too steep but you still want genuine 400+ GSM cotton, this is the bridge: 410 GSM at $110. It clears the “true heavyweight” line, it’s still 100% cotton, and it’s the cheapest way into Jamroc’s heavyweight range.
6. Cooyah graphic hoodies — Best style on a budget (with a caveat)
Weight not published · ~$48 · S–2XL
Cooyah’s reggae-graphic hoodies (Lion Graphic, Irie Rasta, Culture) sit at a friendly $48, and the brand has the deepest catalog of the three. But Cooyah publishes no fabric weight, so we can’t rank it on the one metric this list is built around — and we won’t pretend to. If the graphic is what you’re buying and weight is secondary, it’s a good-value option. If fabric density is the point, buy where the number is printed.
(We don’t currently have an affiliate relationship with Cooyah, so there’s no link here — it’s included purely for honest comparison.)
Who should NOT buy a heavyweight hoodie
- ❌ You live somewhere warm. 500+ GSM cotton will cook you. A 280–350 GSM hoodie is the everyday range; save the heavyweight for real cold.
- ❌ You want it light for layering. Heavyweight hoodies are bulky under a jacket. That’s the point, and the problem, depending on your use.
- ❌ You’re shopping purely on the GSM number. A 417 GSM polyester-sherpa hoodie and a 417 GSM cotton hoodie are different garments. Read the fibre.
- ❌ You need a specific style above 2XL. The heaviest cotton hoodies here top out at XL–2XL.
- ❌ You want cheap. Genuine 500 GSM cotton starts around $110–165. The $40 options are standard weight, honestly labelled.
Frequently asked questions
What GSM counts as a “heavyweight” hoodie? Roughly 400 GSM and up. Standard hoodies are 280–350 GSM. At 400+ the fabric feels structured and heavy; at 500+ it behaves closer to outerwear.
What’s the heaviest hoodie here? Jamroc’s 530 GSM 100% cotton hoodies (Resilience and the zip version). That’s about double a standard hoodie’s weight.
Is Farm Brand’s 417 GSM hoodie heavier than Jamroc’s 410 GSM one? On paper, barely — but they’re not comparable. Farm Brand’s 417 is a polyester sherpa lining; Jamroc’s 410 is cotton. The Farm Brand is warmer; the Jamroc feels denser and more structured.
How do I convert oz to GSM? Multiply ounces by 33.9. An 8 oz hoodie is about 271 GSM; a 12 oz one is about 407 GSM.
Is a heavier hoodie always better quality? No. Weight tells you density and warmth, not stitching or durability. It’s a strong signal of substance, not a guarantee of quality — and we haven’t handled these to judge the rest.
Which is the best value? On price-per-gram, Farm Brand ($14/100 GSM). On genuine heavyweight cotton, Jamroc’s $110 Culture Club Zip is the cheapest way in.
Do these ship to the US? All three run direct-to-consumer US storefronts. Confirm shipping at checkout before ordering.
Methodology and limitations
We read the published product data for all three brands on July 23, 2026 — every hoodie’s price, size options, fibre content, and published fabric weight (in GSM or oz, converted at 33.906 g/m² per oz/yd²). Rankings are based on those printed figures, not on handling the garments.
We have not physically tried on any hoodie here. Fabric weight, fibre, price and sizing are verifiable from published data; feel, durability and true colour are not, and we make no claim about them. Cooyah is included for comparison only and is not ranked on weight, because it publishes none.
Prices and stock change constantly. Check the current listing before buying.
